Weekend Links

Weekend Links

We're in for a cold and snowy weekend (almost another foot of snow is on the way!) and are planning on cuddling up and laying low this weekend. Stay cozy and I hope you have a great weekend!

To get you started here are some fun links from around the web:

I like this idea of 18 goals for 2018. Maybe I'll do this too.

One of my favourite authors wrote a short piece about her kitchens and what they say about her life.

In the same publication: I Was a Bank Robber Until I Read Kant.

My son is not one to sit quietly and be entertained with a colouring book (two disastrous meals out last weekend were proof). He does love to figure things out and do up buckles though, so I ordered him this toy. So far it's been a success and entertained him at the doctor's office yesterday afternoon.

I liked the Fug Girls take on red carpet fashion and #metoo. "It’s always been our belief that one can be interested in fashion, and makeup, and all the associated elements, while also being a serious person who cares about the world and above all does not support sexual harassment, abuse, inequality, and their wretched kin." I agree.

Speaking of fashion, I love how Meghan Markle is putting her own spin on royal style. I totally envy her style, and her coat game is on point.

Trading Spaces is coming back?

XOXO

My Skincare Routine

skincare routine

I've never been one to read beauty blogs, but I really like this series over at A Cup of Jo. It's fun to see what beauty products real women use (and by real women I mean beautiful creative hipster women with amazing skin and unlimited budgets), so I thought it would be fun to share my skincare routine on the blog.

It's only in the past few months that I've started to be a bit more diligent with taking care of my skin, and there are still more nights than I want to admit where I wash my face and don't do anything else. But when I'm careful about following my routine, I really do notice a difference—my skin is softer, clearer, and more even toned.

A note on my skin, it's pretty sensitive and I've had reactions to products that are supposed to be for sensitive skin (hello Cetaphil), and it's also a little on the oily side and prone to breakouts (though a little less so with my advanced age!).

Nighttime Routine

I usually have a shower at night and in the shower I wash my face with this cleanser. It's a little on the pricey side for something you rinse down the drain, but I really like it. I've tried a lot of cheaper drugstore brands and haven't found one I like nearly as much. I love a creamy, foamy cleanser and this one delivers on both counts. It does a good job of removing dirt, grime, and makeup and it rinses off really well, so on nights when I'm too tired to do anything else, I at least feel that my skin is really clean. And a little goes a long way – you only need a pea-sized dot to get a nice lather. I find that because you need so little of it, and because I usually only use it at night, one tube lasts a long time (the tube I bought in July just ran out last week), so it's not too bad a value in the end. I often use it with one of these little scrubby things. I also have one of these brushes, but would like to upgrade someday to this. A good alternative cleanser I sometimes use is this one. It also is a nice creamy, foamy cleanser and does a good job of cleansing my skin.

Most nights I follow up washing my face with using this toner. I know toners get a bad rap, and a lot of people think there is too much alcohol in this toner especially, but it has been a real game changer for me. I started using it when I was having a lot of problems with my skin postpartum, and by adding this into my routine my skin cleared up almost instantly. It has been one of my best beauty finds.

Most nights I use products from The Ordinary. I only recently discovered this skincare line of a few months ago when I was searching for some affordable argan oil, and I absolutely love it! They are a Canadian company and they make skincare products with high quality active ingredients for a really low price. Each product contains only one active ingredient so you can mix and match products to find a routine that suits you. Right now I am using the following three products: Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%. I find that these three products have really helped to even out my skin tone and blemishes are fewer and far between. What I don't like about these products is that my routine takes longer than I like, as I have to apply three or more separate products. But if I apply them between other parts of my bedtime routine (between brushing, flossing, combing out my hair, etc) it's not so bad. Sometimes I'm a little lazy and will only use one or two of the products, either the Niacinamide or the Vitamin C cream. Now that it is winter I think I maybe need to add another moisturizing step into the mix. I have this moisturizer, which is pretty basic, but I like it. I also bought this from The Ordinary but haven't used it yet.

When I do have a blemish I use this treatment cream and I find it clears them up quickly, sometimes overnight. A word of caution, this treatment is a little drying, and it will also bleach anything it comes in contact with (clothes, towels, pillowcases, etc) so be careful. We only have white pillowcases now because of this cream :)

A couple of nights a week I don't use my regular toner or the products from The Ordinary, and instead I use a retinol cream. Right now I'm using this drugstore one and it seems ok. I'd like to try one from The Ordinary once I use up my current tube, but for now what I have works. I find retinol can be a little irritating so that's why I don't use it every night. And I find it's too irritating to use with my salicylic acid toner, so instead I use this witch hazel toner before hand, which makes my skin feel nice and refreshed.

I don't use a specially formulated eye cream (I read somewhere that they are a waste of money), and for the past year I have been using this antioxidant moisturizer (which appears to be discontinued) as an eye cream. It seems to be to work fine. Some nights I'll put a little shea butter under my eyes too.

A few years ago I had some pretty bad eczema and along with the hydrocortisone cream prescribed by my doctor the pharmacist recommended I try this cream and it is amazing! It cleared up my eczema fast and now anytime I have a dry patch on my face from the harsh winter air this really helps it. I also use it on my son in the winter and it helps with his dry skin too.

Morning Routine

My mornings are a lot more streamlined than my nighttime routine as I often don't have a lot of time, and I am really not a morning person. I don't wash my face, but usually give it a quick swipe with this toner again. If I have a few extra minutes I'll put on a little of the same Vitamin C cream I use at night. And then I use sunscreen. I haven't found a great sunscreen since they changed up the formula of my old favourite, but right now I'm using this. And I'm pretty happy with it. For a while I was using this one and I thought it was going to be my new favourite but I find it leaves a funny white powder coating on my skin and I can never get it to fully blend in. That's it. If I have time in the morning I'll put on a little make-up, but often I'm too busy rushing out the door and don't have time.

What's your skincare routine? Any great beauty finds?

XOXO

Binge-Worthy TV Shows

Christmas holidays are for spending time with family and friends—and curling up on the couch with your favourite snack and binge-watching TV shows:)

What did you watch over the Christmas break? Here are two that I did:

1. Suits. Inspired by my obsession with Meghan Markle I started watching Suits on Netflix and I love it! It's a fun legal drama/buddy comedy that is quite entertaining. Of course Meghan Markle is amazing on it, but the whole cast is great, especially Patrick J. Adams and the always amazing Gina Torres. Also, if you're a fellow Canuck and familiar with Toronto, it's fun to recognize the shooting locations. There are over 100 episodes of Suits (I'm somewhere through season four) so it will definitely keep you going over the long winter.

2. The Crown. I was a little skeptical about the second season of The Crown, but decided to watch it anyways. Although I did think there was too much focus on Prince Philip (he is not a sympathetic character in my mind) I enjoyed the second series, especially the amazing subtle performance by Claire Foy (and I enjoyed the always delightful Matthew Goode). I'm interested to see where it goes in the next season with a whole new cast. I'll miss Claire Foy, but I'm excited to see what Olivia Colman will do with role.

Did you watch any good TV over the break? Any good recommendations?

XOXO

Weekend Links

Weekend Links

It's the first weekend of 2018! What are you up to? We're going to Quebec City for my husband's Christmas party! It should be a fun, if very cold, weekend!

Here are a few fun links from around the web...

Speaking of the cold, I upgraded my winter wear this year, and I'm pretty thankful as it has been an extremely cold winter so far (it's almost like a prairie winter out here!). I snagged this coat for 1/2 price a couple of months ago and have been happy with it. The faux fur on it is pretty mangy looking, but easy to remove. I also picked up this snood from Montreal-based Soia & Kyo and the extra warmth around the shoulders makes all the difference.

I've been doing a lot of reading on minimalism lately, trying to find ideas to help me implement my new year's resolutions. I really like this article, especially that it includes calls to action to help you put minimalism into practice (and that it recognizes that minimalism is an ongoing process). I also took a deep-dive through this blog. It's inspiring to see how families with young kids are able to make the minimalism work for them. I especially liked this post about how living small at home let's you live big in other areas.

My son (unfortunately) loves Paw Patrol. This article confirmed my suspicion that the series is just a way to market toys to kids. So far we have resisted purchasing any Paw Patrol items, but my son's classmate has a Paw Patrol backpack and every morning that I drop him off at pre-school he longingly stares at it...

Very interesting read.

I don't know why, but I love looking at these celeb at the airport slideshows over at GoFugYourself. This is an old but  interesting read about the phenomenon.

On the blog six years ago: best ever brunch!

Have a great weekend!

XOXO

New Year's Resolutions

New Year's sparkler

Happy New Year!

I planned to set time aside during my son's nap time on New Year's Eve to write this post, so it could be ready to go up on New Year's Day. But, after a fun morning at the Montreal Science Centre, my son had a bit of a serious accident and we spent the rest of the day in the ER while he got stitched up. Thankfully my son is fine, and the whole incident was a reminder that even though as much as we try make plans, the unexpected will happen, and it's important to give ourselves grace when things don't go as planned. I love making resolutions and goal setting, but it's good to be mindful that things do not always go as outlined. It's important to have goals and plans to move us forward, but it's also important to remember to give ourselves grace when we don't (or can't) live up to the high expectations we place on ourselves.

With that in mind, here are my resolutions for 2018:

1. Learn to be content with less. I really want to embrace minimalism (well as much as you can with an almost two-year old in the house) and learn to be satisfied with what I have. Being more mindful of my choices and how I spend my time (and money) is my over-arching goal for this year. One area I have way too much (and spend way to much money on) is clothing. I know I'll never make the whole year with no shopping, as there are a couple gaps in my wardrobe, and I'm sure I'll succumb to a new trend or two, but I want to buy less, and use and enjoy the clothes I actually have. My action item: only spend $250 this year on clothing and shoes. This limited amount will only let me make two or three purchases over the year, so I will have to plan my purchases carefully.

2. Meditate. This also goes towards learning to be more mindful. In the past when I have incorporated the practice of meditation into my everyday life I've found the clarity of mind that comes through meditation to be extremely calming (and stress-reducing) as well as helpful in making important decisions. Even though I find the practice to be beneficial, I have a hard time incorporating it into my regular routine, and sticking with the practice. Action item: meditate once a week. I'm going to schedule a meditation session once a week in my calendar to help me make meditation a regular practice.

3. Spend less time on my phone. This article is good motivation to remember that all the time I spend on my phone is not healthy. Besides the potentially dangerous physical harms of being on our digital devices all the time, spending so much time on my phone makes me less connected to the people in my life. Although I enjoy Instagram, blogs, and other social media they should not be the primary form of connection in my life and they distract me and pull me away from my family and friends. This is going to be a tough habit for me to break, so my action item is baby steps to start: no phone time between 9:00 pm and 9:00 am. Not only will this help me sleep better, but this will give me time to connect with my family during mornings and evenings.

What are your new year's resolutions?

Wishing you health and happiness and all the best in 2018!

XOXO

Christmas Party Style

My husband's office Christmas party is going to be in Quebec City this year and I'm so excited to go! It's a dressy party, yet has a lumber jack theme (only in la belle province could this be a thing?!?). I think I'm going to wear this dress from my closet (I love that it has long sleeves) and I ordered a pair of buffalo check tights off of Amazon which I think that will fit the theme. And I'm toying with pairing them with a pair of wooly socks like this. And maybe a toque?

If I didn't have such an interesting(!) dress code to follow, this is what I would wear...

A beautiful, simple red dress, with just enough embellishment to make it special. (And with long sleeves to keep me warm.)

A gorgeous wool coat to wrap up in style to and fro.

Pointy patent leather pumps with a comfortable heel.

A classic minimalist clutch to carry essentials. (Like this red lipstick).

Modern gold earrings (handmade in Canada) for the perfect finishing touch.

XOXO

Currently Craving: Shearling Boots

Shearling clog boots

I already added a second pair of boots to my winter boot collection this year — I snagged a very practical pair of  Cougar boots for less than half price at the beginning of fall — but I'm craving these amazing winter boots by No. 6.

My clog craving hasn't diminished since this summer and these winter boots look super warm and very cool. And I have a confession to make: I love shearling boots. My Ugg boots are one of my most worn items in my closet. I got a new pair of classic slim boots last winter and they are so warm and comfy. Even through the coldest winter days my toes stayed toasty and warm, and with the thicker sole I made it through slushy Montreal streets dry as a bone, and didn't get any salt or water stains on my boots. But Uggs are a little uncool, you know, and these shearling boots are very, very (hipster) cool, aren't they?

I haven't dived into the world of clogs yet though, because, besides the very high price tag, I just don't know if they are comfortable. I know people who wear clogs swear by them, but I walk a lot. On a typical weekday I clock at least 8 km (about 5 miles), and because I'm often running late, a lot of these miles are at race-walking pace. And honestly most days I eschew my more stylish ankle boots for my sneakers (or now that it's cold my aforementioned Ugg boots). I need to have comfy shoes. Can clogs handle this kind of daily mileage? They are
très cool though.

Clogs, yay or nay?

XOXO

5 Tips for Travelling to NYC with a Baby

Sightseeing at the Brooklyn Bridge

Last year we went down to NYC for a few days before Christmas. It was a fun trip—even though our son hardly slept while we were away, and we were so, so tired!

Since our son was still so little (not quite 10 months) and not very mobile, we decided to take in as many adult sights as we could. We know in future years our trips will be dominated by kid-friendly attractions, so we skipped the museums and checked out lots of neighbourhoods. We wandered through Soho, Chelsea, the West Village, made our first trip to Brooklyn (well beyond a quick trek we made to Grimaldi's quite a few years ago), and hit up the Christmas market at Bryant Park.

We've been down to NYC around Christmastime a few times—it's such a magical time to be in the city, and for a couple of hearty Canucks the weather is pretty manageable. But this trip to NYC was our first major trip travelling with our son that wasn't going to visit family and we were a little worried about how it would all go down. Read on for some tips about travelling with a baby, and a couple of pics from our trip:

1. Hotels are tricky.

We were on a pretty tight budget last holiday season, so the only way we were able to go down to NYC was because my husband found a crazy Black Friday deal on a hotel—but staying in a hotel room with a 9-month old can be challenging. The particular hotel we stayed in was especially challenging as the rooms are tiny—it was in a great location, and though tiny, the rooms were comfortable, so it would make for a fine place to stay for a couple—but for us it was difficult as our son did not sleep.

Now I know baby sleep and how you choose to put your little one down is different for each family, so I our experience won't apply to everyone. If you are a family that co-sleeps I don't think that you would experience the same challenges that we did. Our son sleeps best in his own crib in his own room, and we have a pretty consistent bed-time routine that works for us. The hotel provided us with a travel crib and we put our son down to bed every night in it. And he actually settled pretty well. We tried to be as quiet as possible after he tucked into bed, and he probably got a good 3 or 4 hours of sleep in, but then he would wake up slightly after midnight and would not settle. We tried moving him into the bed with us, we tried rocking and calming and nursing and putting him back into his own crib, we tried everything we could think of, and nothing worked. The first few nights of the trip we hardly got any sleep at all. Part of the problem (hindsight is 20/20 isn't it?) is that we put the travel crib by the door to the hotel room, and I think the light, noise, and footsteps from the hallway bothered him. Our last night we moved the crib to the other side of the room and our son slept through the night. So my advice to you is don't put the travel crib in front of the hotel room door!

Since this trip, we have always opted for an Airbnb, so our son has his own space at night, and trips for the most part have gone much smoother. It's also nice to have a little bit of space to ourselves at night too, because the reality of travelling with a baby means heading home early and spending a lot more time in your hotel room (at least more time than we were accustomed to when we travelled in the past).

2. The baby carrier is your best friend.

We brought our travel stroller with us to NYC and we used it exactly twice—to get to and from the parking lot in which we parked our car (we drove down to NYC as it's only a 6-hour drive from Montreal and my husband is comfortable driving in New York traffic). The rest of the time we used our baby carrier. We relied on the baby carrier a ton when our son was little to get around Montreal, and the same was true when navigating the busy streets of NYC. We walked or took public transportation everywhere we went and not having to navigate the subway or crowed sidewalks with a stroller was so much easier. My son was pretty used to being in the carrier and was content to be in it for long stretches, and because he hardly slept at night, he napped in it a lot during the day. My husband and I took turns wearing him and we were able to get around the city easily. I have an older model of this Ergo baby carrier and love it. We also bought the winter cover for it before our trip and it was great. We dressed our little guy in his regular clothes, made sure he had extra socks on his feet, and then put him in one of these fleece bunting suits and he was nice and toasty in temps that were just above freezing.

3. Embrace the squeezy pack.

Up until this trip we had only fed our son homemade baby food (oh how times have changed, haha), so we were a little stressed about what to do about his food. We knew we couldn't pack enough homemade food for the trip, and crossing the border with food can be tricky (just ask my husband about the time we got stopped for hours at the border and had our car searched because I had two mandarin oranges with me—that I surrendered immediately). Relying on squeezy packs, and letting him nibble off of our plates was the easy solution. I'm not big into relying on food packs all the time, but they definitely work in a pinch. We stopped at a Target on the way down to pick some up, but they were readily available at Duane Reade or CVS.

4. Seek out good kid-friendly restaurants.

You don't have to eat at bad chains or Chuck E. Cheese just because you have a baby. Surprisingly we found a lot of NYC eating establishments to be very accommodating to babies. We did a lot of internet research ahead of time, and between that and stumbling upon a few places we were able to eat really well. The first night we went to Eataly, which was the only place we went that wasn't really baby friendly (no highchairs), but the staff was very accommodating. We had to balance the babe on our laps, but the meal was delicious and definitely worth it. We also checked out Bubby's for brunch, Sweet Chick in Brooklyn for southern comfort food, S'Mac in the East Village for yummy mac n' cheese (but not so much for the ambience), Shake Shack for the best burgers and milkshakes, and a few other favourite stops including Donut Plant, and Murray's Bagels.

5. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Before we left I was a little worried about how to handle all the regular baby things—feeding, changing, bathing, napping—and it turns out they were pretty easy to manage. Anytime we stopped at a restaurant or coffee shop we took the opportunity to change our son. Hotel lobbies were also great for this, and they usually had a change table in their bathrooms, whereas not all restaurants and cafes we stopped at did.

I was still nursing my son at the time (so we didn't have to worry about packing bottles or formula) and also found that you could usually find a quiet corner in a hotel lobby for a quick nursing session. Clothing store changing rooms also worked in a pinch for nursing, or even on warmer days a quiet corner at a neighbourhood park.

We only bathed our son every 2-3 days at the time so as not to dry out his skin, so we gave him a bath the night before we left and just didn't bathe him while we were gone, making sure to give him a good sponge bath before bed each night. And because he wasn't sleeping well at night, we didn't have any problems having him nap while out and about with him in the carrier. We tried to stop at a few parks during the day to give him a break from the carrier and to let him have a crawl (or swing) around. We also brought a few favourite toys from home to play with at the hotel.

And finally, have fun! Travelling with a baby can be stressful, but try to have a good time. Relax your regular schedule a bit, roll with the punches, and enjoy your trip. Soon that little baby will be on the move and have a mind of his own, and it won't be so easy to take him to grown-up stores or restaurants!

Weekend Links

Weekend Links

Yay, it's Friday! We have no plans this weekend, and I am looking forward to having a relaxing and slow weekend before the hustle and bustle of Christmas. Hope you have a great weekend too, and here are a few interesting reads:

One word: awesome. Also interesting.

I am fascinated by bitcoin. A neighbour of mine invested in some a few weeks ago for $5,000 and now it is worth over $15,000! I don't really understand it, but man I should have invested in it too.

An interesting article about women and money.

We put up our Christmas tree last weekend, and after a bit of a debate we decided to put up our artificial tree, even though we're going to be home for Christmas this year. Our tree is so pretty, but I do miss the smell of a real tree. I bought these candles this week, and they smell exactly like a Christmas tree! I normally am not one for scented candles but these smell so good.

So I finally am going to get my haircut, after not getting it cut for over a year. This is my inspiration. I'm also thinking of highlighting my hair—the inspiration pic is actually close to my natural colour, but I like how the model has some face framing highlights. I'm trying to convince my hubby to help me do it at home. I found this article and it doesn't seem so hard?

This is old news, but I just found out that Claire Foy has been cast in this iconic role? I think she is really talented but I'm not convinced. Speaking of Claire Foy, the second season of The Crown came out on Netflix today. I have my doubts about this season, but we all know I'm going to watch it.

The best podcasts of 2017.

I'm making this for supper tonight. Looks hearty.

I'm a fan of this blog. And yes to the last two paragraphs.

Have a great weekend!

XOXO
