My son is not one to sit quietly and be entertained with a colouring book (two disastrous meals out last weekend were proof). He does love to figure things out and do up buckles though, so I ordered him this toy. So far it's been a success and entertained him at the doctor's office yesterday afternoon.

I liked the Fug Girls take on red carpet fashion and #metoo. "It’s always been our belief that one can be interested in fashion, and makeup, and all the associated elements, while also being a serious person who cares about the world and above all does not support sexual harassment, abuse, inequality, and their wretched kin." I agree.

Speaking of fashion, I love how Meghan Markle is putting her own spin on royal style. I totally envy her style, and her coat game is on point.

My Skincare Routine

I've never been one to read beauty blogs, but I really like this series over at A Cup of Jo. It's fun to see what beauty products real women use (and by real women I mean beautiful creative hipster women with amazing skin and unlimited budgets), so I thought it would be fun to share my skincare routine on the blog.

It's only in the past few months that I've started to be a bit more diligent with taking care of my skin, and there are still more nights than I want to admit where I wash my face and don't do anything else. But when I'm careful about following my routine, I really do notice a difference—my skin is softer, clearer, and more even toned.

A note on my skin, it's pretty sensitive and I've had reactions to products that are supposed to be for sensitive skin (hello Cetaphil), and it's also a little on the oily side and prone to breakouts (though a little less so with my advanced age!).

Nighttime Routine

I usually have a shower at night and in the shower I wash my face with this cleanser. It's a little on the pricey side for something you rinse down the drain, but I really like it. I've tried a lot of cheaper drugstore brands and haven't found one I like nearly as much. I love a creamy, foamy cleanser and this one delivers on both counts. It does a good job of removing dirt, grime, and makeup and it rinses off really well, so on nights when I'm too tired to do anything else, I at least feel that my skin is really clean. And a little goes a long way – you only need a pea-sized dot to get a nice lather. I find that because you need so little of it, and because I usually only use it at night, one tube lasts a long time (the tube I bought in July just ran out last week), so it's not too bad a value in the end. I often use it with one of these little scrubby things. I also have one of these brushes, but would like to upgrade someday to this. A good alternative cleanser I sometimes use is this one. It also is a nice creamy, foamy cleanser and does a good job of cleansing my skin.

Most nights I follow up washing my face with using this toner. I know toners get a bad rap, and a lot of people think there is too much alcohol in this toner especially, but it has been a real game changer for me. I started using it when I was having a lot of problems with my skin postpartum, and by adding this into my routine my skin cleared up almost instantly. It has been one of my best beauty finds.

Most nights I use products from The Ordinary. I only recently discovered this skincare line of a few months ago when I was searching for some affordable argan oil, and I absolutely love it! They are a Canadian company and they make skincare products with high quality active ingredients for a really low price. Each product contains only one active ingredient so you can mix and match products to find a routine that suits you. Right now I am using the following three products: Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%. I find that these three products have really helped to even out my skin tone and blemishes are fewer and far between. What I don't like about these products is that my routine takes longer than I like, as I have to apply three or more separate products. But if I apply them between other parts of my bedtime routine (between brushing, flossing, combing out my hair, etc) it's not so bad. Sometimes I'm a little lazy and will only use one or two of the products, either the Niacinamide or the Vitamin C cream. Now that it is winter I think I maybe need to add another moisturizing step into the mix. I have this moisturizer, which is pretty basic, but I like it. I also bought this from The Ordinary but haven't used it yet.

When I do have a blemish I use this treatment cream and I find it clears them up quickly, sometimes overnight. A word of caution, this treatment is a little drying, and it will also bleach anything it comes in contact with (clothes, towels, pillowcases, etc) so be careful. We only have white pillowcases now because of this cream :)

A couple of nights a week I don't use my regular toner or the products from The Ordinary, and instead I use a retinol cream. Right now I'm using this drugstore one and it seems ok. I'd like to try one from The Ordinary once I use up my current tube, but for now what I have works. I find retinol can be a little irritating so that's why I don't use it every night. And I find it's too irritating to use with my salicylic acid toner, so instead I use this witch hazel toner before hand, which makes my skin feel nice and refreshed.

I don't use a specially formulated eye cream (I read somewhere that they are a waste of money), and for the past year I have been using this antioxidant moisturizer (which appears to be discontinued) as an eye cream. It seems to be to work fine. Some nights I'll put a little shea butter under my eyes too.

A few years ago I had some pretty bad eczema and along with the hydrocortisone cream prescribed by my doctor the pharmacist recommended I try this cream and it is amazing! It cleared up my eczema fast and now anytime I have a dry patch on my face from the harsh winter air this really helps it. I also use it on my son in the winter and it helps with his dry skin too.

Morning Routine

My mornings are a lot more streamlined than my nighttime routine as I often don't have a lot of time, and I am really not a morning person. I don't wash my face, but usually give it a quick swipe with this toner again. If I have a few extra minutes I'll put on a little of the same Vitamin C cream I use at night. And then I use sunscreen. I haven't found a great sunscreen since they changed up the formula of my old favourite, but right now I'm using this. And I'm pretty happy with it. For a while I was using this one and I thought it was going to be my new favourite but I find it leaves a funny white powder coating on my skin and I can never get it to fully blend in. That's it. If I have time in the morning I'll put on a little make-up, but often I'm too busy rushing out the door and don't have time.

Binge-Worthy TV Shows


Christmas holidays are for spending time with family and friends—and curling up on the couch with your favourite snack and binge-watching TV shows:)

What did you watch over the Christmas break? Here are two that I did:

1. Suits. Inspired by my obsession with Meghan Markle I started watching Suits on Netflix and I love it! It's a fun legal drama/buddy comedy that is quite entertaining. Of course Meghan Markle is amazing on it, but the whole cast is great, especially Patrick J. Adams and the always amazing Gina Torres. Also, if you're a fellow Canuck and familiar with Toronto, it's fun to recognize the shooting locations. There are over 100 episodes of Suits (I'm somewhere through season four) so it will definitely keep you going over the long winter.

2. The Crown. I was a little skeptical about the second season of The Crown, but decided to watch it anyways. Although I did think there was too much focus on Prince Philip (he is not a sympathetic character in my mind) I enjoyed the second series, especially the amazing subtle performance by Claire Foy (and I enjoyed the always delightful Matthew Goode). I'm interested to see where it goes in the next season with a whole new cast. I'll miss Claire Foy, but I'm excited to see what Olivia Colman will do with role.

Weekend Links

Weekend Links

It's the first weekend of 2018! What are you up to? We're going to Quebec City for my husband's Christmas party! It should be a fun, if very cold, weekend!

Speaking of the cold, I upgraded my winter wear this year, and I'm pretty thankful as it has been an extremely cold winter so far (it's almost like a prairie winter out here!). I snagged this coat for 1/2 price a couple of months ago and have been happy with it. The faux fur on it is pretty mangy looking, but easy to remove. I also picked up this snood from Montreal-based Soia & Kyo and the extra warmth around the shoulders makes all the difference.

I've been doing a lot of reading on minimalism lately, trying to find ideas to help me implement my new year's resolutions. I really like this article, especially that it includes calls to action to help you put minimalism into practice (and that it recognizes that minimalism is an ongoing process). I also took a deep-dive through this blog. It's inspiring to see how families with young kids are able to make the minimalism work for them. I especially liked this post about how living small at home let's you live big in other areas.

My son (unfortunately) loves Paw Patrol. This article confirmed my suspicion that the series is just a way to market toys to kids. So far we have resisted purchasing any Paw Patrol items, but my son's classmate has a Paw Patrol backpack and every morning that I drop him off at pre-school he longingly stares at it...

Very interesting read.

I don't know why, but I love looking at these celeb at the airport slideshows over at GoFugYourself. This is an old but  interesting read about the phenomenon.

New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year!

I planned to set time aside during my son's nap time on New Year's Eve to write this post, so it could be ready to go up on New Year's Day. But, after a fun morning at the Montreal Science Centre, my son had a bit of a serious accident and we spent the rest of the day in the ER while he got stitched up. Thankfully my son is fine, and the whole incident was a reminder that even though as much as we try make plans, the unexpected will happen, and it's important to give ourselves grace when things don't go as planned. I love making resolutions and goal setting, but it's good to be mindful that things do not always go as outlined. It's important to have goals and plans to move us forward, but it's also important to remember to give ourselves grace when we don't (or can't) live up to the high expectations we place on ourselves.

With that in mind, here are my resolutions for 2018:

1. Learn to be content with less. I really want to embrace minimalism (well as much as you can with an almost two-year old in the house) and learn to be satisfied with what I have. Being more mindful of my choices and how I spend my time (and money) is my over-arching goal for this year. One area I have way too much (and spend way to much money on) is clothing. I know I'll never make the whole year with no shopping, as there are a couple gaps in my wardrobe, and I'm sure I'll succumb to a new trend or two, but I want to buy less, and use and enjoy the clothes I actually have. My action item: only spend $250 this year on clothing and shoes. This limited amount will only let me make two or three purchases over the year, so I will have to plan my purchases carefully.

2. Meditate. This also goes towards learning to be more mindful. In the past when I have incorporated the practice of meditation into my everyday life I've found the clarity of mind that comes through meditation to be extremely calming (and stress-reducing) as well as helpful in making important decisions. Even though I find the practice to be beneficial, I have a hard time incorporating it into my regular routine, and sticking with the practice. Action item: meditate once a week. I'm going to schedule a meditation session once a week in my calendar to help me make meditation a regular practice.

3. Spend less time on my phone. This article is good motivation to remember that all the time I spend on my phone is not healthy. Besides the potentially dangerous physical harms of being on our digital devices all the time, spending so much time on my phone makes me less connected to the people in my life. Although I enjoy Instagram, blogs, and other social media they should not be the primary form of connection in my life and they distract me and pull me away from my family and friends. This is going to be a tough habit for me to break, so my action item is baby steps to start: no phone time between 9:00 pm and 9:00 am. Not only will this help me sleep better, but this will give me time to connect with my family during mornings and evenings.
